It was chilly outside for us Californians tonight. Yes, we understand we don’t know what cold is when compared to other cities. I’ve been to parts of Japan where it is way freaking colder, but I’m not here to talk about climate and cold fronts.
I mention all this because Norm and I were waiting for a table at Geta in Oakland, and we were waiting on the sidewalk because the restaurant was tiny. We were sold on the availability of toro and hamichi kama (collar bone). First of all, this cute French girl told us to go in, put our names down, place an order, and then the food would be ready 15 min once we were seated. Good advice that we didn’t heed. It wasn’t that we didn’t trust her, but we weren’t sure if we were going to stick it out in the cold. Enter M & B. I don’t know if I have permission to use their real names. B came out and said that they were given a table for four and that we could take the other two seats. The couple felt bad that Norm and I would have to wait outside. Wow! Three really cool folks who were ready to help a couple of strangers out. We had a great time talking to M & B, so much so that we exchanged some info in the hopes of grabbing some beers in the future. Good things come to those who like to eat!
Once again, many thanks to the lovely, hospitable couple. You were kind, and it was a pleasure to share a meal with you. I’ll be sure to do something nice for someone out there to spread the karma and holiday cheer.
Our hamachi, toro, oyako don, and spicy tuna were all tasty. I really need to get that apartment or house in Oakland.

You see? If I had joined you for dinner, we three would be waiting in the cold.
